IVAD09 – Sorry I Missed It

Hi there!

Don’t know what IVAD09 was? Me neither until it was too late to join in. IVAD09 stands for”International Vulture Awareness Day 2009″, which occurred on September 5th, and I must admit, my first thought was of a caricature vulture looking over somebody’s shoulder. But I read an article on eco, and I started thinking a little more seriously about how valuable vultures are to the world.

I have to say, I cannot imagine the problems we would have if all the vultures disappeared overnight, but there are sure a lot of animal carcasses that would go really bad in a big way! And imagine the America’s western moountains without the condors. Wow, what a loss that would be. So I gave up the caricature, and found this typical guy instead (I’m assuming it’s a him – I don’t really know). He is a Griffon Vulture (gyps fulvus) and his kind are found in a discontinuous band from Spain across southern Europe and more consistently in southern Asia from Turkey to Nepal with a spike up into Kazakstan. In some areas he is making a come-back, in others, he is threatened by modern practices and ignorance.

I really did put September 5th into my calendar for next year – I have a great respect for these large birds – they do a job that none of the rest of us seem to be interested in, and get shot at and poisoned for doing it!

Thanks for lookin’ in!
