A New Home and a New Format
Most likely, you won’t notice a difference in the presentation of this blog (I hope not!), but we’ve just completed a relocation from our free but temporary home at another hosting organisation we will not mention (as a subdomain) to our permanent home (we hope!) at StartLogic. Since it was not possible to just transfer the blog (technical reasons: “You cannot transfer a WP blog to your StartLogic account … “) we decided to upgrade to WordPress version 2.7.1 (the newest non-beta release) at the same time. And it worked! To be honest, I’m very glad that we were able to do it early in the blog’s life – moving an old, convoluted blog would had presented immense difficulties. One of the reasons for moving to StartLogic was the automatic installation of WordPress, the availability of 2.7.1, and the availability of cURL in the php system: we need this for the rss in some of our existing websites. Also, they have nice prices, particularly when you buy a year’s worth at a time.
The changes between WP version 2.6 and 2.7.1 appear more obvious on the “inside”; the appearance of the control area – called the dashboard – was completely revised. Luckily most of the logic of where things are located in the dashboard is unchanged. There are a few add-ons things (widgets) that don’t (yet) work in 2.7.1 but they did not present any significant problems. Now that I have been working with it for about 48 hours (clock time, not my time), I have to stop and think before I change something in one of the older WP blogs we have running. I have to say that I’m pretty much neutral on which version is easier to use, but the new one is supposed to be better and faster.
The same is true for the new hosting company. We tried to set up the blog on one of the more well-known free hosting companies, but after they started playing games with us (example: fantastico was not available and continued to be unavailable for at least two weeks while they were “updating” it – but there was another solution available at the paid hosting level!), we started looking elsewhere. I stumbled over (sorry, not meant to be advertising – I don’t even use it!) another hosting group, StartLogic, that is inexpensive, the servers and connections to the web seem to be very fast, and my existing account had room for additional domains and subdomains at no additional cost.
Anyway, everything is back to the condition it was before we moved from http://green02.webmaster-resources.info, which is no longer functional. The SEO will be much simpler with the blog name Green Home MegaStore and URL http://greenhomemegastore.com being the same!
Now, we just need to get more of you friendly readers on board with us!
Glad to be finished with all that, but, after all, a webmaster’s work is never done!
Ciao for now,
for
Sue & Craig Websites
