BTW – We’re Green Too
BTW – We’re Green Too

Hi again,
It just occurred to me that maybe we are not blowing our own horn loud enough. What do I mean by that?
Well, I guess the best way to demonstrate that is to talk a little bit about our suppliers and ourselves. For example, our domain name registrar is Net Firms
. In addition to selling domain names consistently at the lowest prices I have found, Net Firms is going in the direction of reducing environmentally unfriendly practices as opposed to just using renewable energy. The energy they do use, they are reducing by energy saving practices – including going to DC power in their server park – as well as getting it from green sources. They also are reducing/eliminating harmful products and practices used in the everyday business world. You can find out more about what they are doing here.

Our hosting company is named StartLogic
. We use them because they provide reliable, inexpensive hosting for our services, and they have a live 24-hour support chat. They went green as an employee-based movement, but since they are located in the Boston city center area, it’s almost impossible for them to use local wind and solar power, so they buy certified green power, and are also, like Net Firms, reducing polluting practices to extinction, wherever possible. They have even gone so far that some of the local employees have switched to bicycles instead cars. They don’t blow their horn about the green practices, and I even had to cobble up one of their banners to get the green part on it.
At our location in Ontario, Canada, Sue and her family use home-cut wood heating (no a/c up there in the North Woods
), and are highly environment-conscious in their location. In Ontario, the electricity supply is primarily generated from water – the agency is called Ontario Hydro – and some of it is even generated at Niagara Falls!
At our location here in central Italy, we are using green power coming primarily from wind power within about 100km (60 miles), although there are also a few solar farms connected to the system as well, provided by a company that only sells “green electricity”. We save between 5% and 15% over normal electrical cost. We also practice minimum paper (a ream of printer paper lasts us for a year), we have no air conditioning (see our post Natural Air Conditioning), we heat to the extent possible with wood and the rest is with LPG (natural gas is not available within a reasonable distance) and keep our inside temperatures low (14-15C = 57-59F), we recycle to the degree possible here in Italy, and we minimise/eliminate polluting substances. Transport trips are minimised also, so gasoline consumption is reduced (no, we don’t have green vehicles – yet). Our pool is still “natural” – no chemicals at all, but we have swimming “partners” – this probably will have to change next year by law (we are a B&B). We also discourage hunting in the area, but in Italy, that’s impossible to stop.
Finally, green also happens to be my favorite colour!
“Practicing what we preach” is what we do, and we preach Practical Greenology!
